Facebook Seminary: Pakistan Pastors-in-Training Plug In with AU Professor

Students in Pakistan gather around a laptop…

By Carl Stagner

God is on the move through the Church of God in Pakistan, and it’s a breathtaking sight to behold. On Saturday evenings, seminary students in the Middle Eastern country assemble to hear Sarah Blake LaRose teach hermeneutics and exegesis. But Sarah is not in the same room—not exactly, anyway. Ten time zones away, it’s Saturday morning in Anderson, Indiana, where the AU professor has logged on to Facebook Messenger. There she lectures on the topic of Scripture interpretation, fielding questions and interacting with her pastors-in-training in Pakistan. Continue reading

Deaf Ministry Family’s Inspirational Story Captured in 90-Minute Documentary

By Carl Stagner

Rachel was like any other newborn—cute, cuddly, curious. The daughter of Church of God music minister Marshall Lawrence and communication professor Terry appeared to be a perfectly healthy baby, even receiving an all-clear from her pediatrician. But there was one thing that set her apart, one thing that ultimately proved not a disability but a special ability. At fifteen months of age, Rachel was diagnosed as deaf, turning her parents’ world upside down and charting a course the family would never have expected to take. The emotionally gripping, thoroughly fascinating, and powerfully inspirational story of the Lawrence family’s journey with Rachel premiered late last year in Indianapolis as a ninety-minute documentary. Don Boggs, former Anderson University faculty member and producer of the early Gaither Homecoming videos, offers a close look at the making of his film. Continue reading

Florida Pastor Offers Fathers, Husbands Tools for Life

Joshua and family celebrating the ministry of Man Wisdoms.

By Carl Stagner

Meet Joshua Zarzana. The young pastor from the Northwest has recently moved to the Southeast, accepting the lead pastor role at Spirit Lake Community Church of God in Winter Haven, Florida. But just because his ministry setting and title have changed doesn’t mean one of his greatest passions has dried up. In fact, Joshua’s heart for men’s ministry remains strong and seems only to be growing. And it shows, as his ongoing platform to reach men can now be accessed anywhere WiFi or data is available! Through regular video posts, Joshua’s “Man Wisdoms” outreach offers nuggets of wisdom tailored especially to the particular needs of men at home, work, church, society and more. With Father’s Day in view, the need for godly husbands and dads is perhaps arguably greater than ever, and Joshua Zarzana has chosen not to sit on the sidelines. He’s cheering his fellow man on to the goal set before them through Jesus Christ. Continue reading

Freedom Fight Takes Aim at Root Causes of Trafficking

By Carl Stagner

In 2014, the Church of God reintroduced its longstanding commitment to freedom with the launch of CHOG Trafficklight. Since then, the Movement has galvanized around the cause of advancing freedom for the enslaved, the overlooked, and the oppressed through awareness and through support of established organizations. On the heels of Church of God Convention 2017, the first-ever Church of God Freedom Summit not only celebrated the success of CHOG Trafficklight, but also turned our attention to the root causes of trafficking and sexual exploitation. Trafficklight 2.0: Freedom Fight will help us fight a global scourge at an international, domestic, and local church level, even down to our own homes. Continue reading

Remembering Our Heroes of the Faith

By Carl Stagner

Their words of wisdom still echo in our minds. Their gestures of love are as vivid as they ever were. Their touch on our lives can still be felt. They are our heroes of the faith, and though their physical presence may be gone from this earth, their influence and impact remain. A recent video created by Church of God Ministries pays tribute to many of those ordained ministers whose departure from this life leaves us with an inexplicable blend of grief and joy. Church of God Historical Society Releases New Film

By Carl Stagner

Several Church of God pastors and lay leaders arrived in Anderson early for the June Regional Convention to watch a special pre-screening of a new film. A few weeks later, the Historical Society of the Church of God was excited to announce the release of Anderson University Roots: The Workers’ Home Years (1906–1918) on DVD. The film documents stories of the early days of the Church of God as early leaders settled in Anderson, Indiana. Unlike From Heaven to Earth and other historical snapshots of the movement’s history, this new offering virtually transports the viewer to the present-day campus of Anderson University and shows exactly where our pioneers trod. Fascinating, thought-provoking, and inspiring, this new film about a portion of our history speaks life into our future by revealing a mighty God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Choosing Jesus Over Porn: A North Carolina Pastor’s Victory

By Carl Stagner

No one wants to talk about it. It’s silently eating away at the souls of our teens, our men (and women), and even our younger children. Our Sunday school teachers aren’t immune. Our board members and elders aren’t immune. Our pastors aren’t immune. Why aren’t we talking about it? The world is. Lately, so is Aaron Holman, pastor of youth and young adults at New River Community Church of God in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina. Ordained in July, this Christ-centered leader is boldly sharing his own struggle with pornography so others may find freedom. Continue reading

Disaster Relief: Malawi Flooding Video Update

By Stephen Lewis

The rains in early January brought massive flooding to broad swathes of the country of Malawi, where the Church of God has more than 136 congregations.* Immediate reports indicated that a number of church buildings and individual homes were completely destroyed as roofs blew off and wood-fired mud-brick walls disintegrated under the constant rain, literally dissolving into mud. Other buildings and houses were partially damaged and will require repair. In some parts of the country, roads were washed away, as were recently planted crops. Eye-Opening: Church Uses Video to Raise Awareness of Sex Trafficking

InPlainSightDVD_cover_FORWEB

By Dave Baylor

According to the Polaris Project, there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking worldwide. Of these, four to five million are trafficked for sexual exploitation. Most people agree that these numbers are appalling and that something should be done, but sex trafficking is often viewed as an international problem. We think it is something that occurs in foreign lands, far from our cities and neighborhoods. Yet, the truth is something quite different. Sex trafficking is happening in right here, in the United States, in places like Baltimore, Nashville, Little Rock, Dallas, and Sacramento. Continue reading
