CBH Co-host/AU Professor Offers “Preacher Girls” New Resource

By Carl Stagner

Women in ministry face different challenges than their male peers. Of course, there’s the challenge of equal opportunity in congregations—even in the Church of God. But, another challenge tests the tenacity of women divinely called by God and, at the same time, demonstrates their uniquely gifted abilities to balance multiple assignments. How do these women in ministry, many of whom were called after their college years, find time to hone their craft amid jobs, community involvements, and parenting, for example? Thankfully, a trusted voice in the Church of God now offers a solution: Preacher Girl School. CBH ViewPoint co-host and Anderson University professor Kimberly Majeski convenes the online experience, led by women in ministry, for women in ministry, all to help take their preaching to the next level. From the Archives: How to Stay Alive Spiritually

By James Albrecht

All vital Christians know the thrill of the new birth—that point in time when they came to life spiritually. What a great surge of joy and relief came to their mind and spirits as they became alive and free from sin and its consequence, death. This was a moment of beginning a new and vibrant relationship with God. But many Christians have long since lost that early enthusiasm of the spirit. Continue reading

Weightlifting and the Word: MO Pastor Memorizes Scripture, Lifts 300 Lbs.

By Noel Marquis

Pastor Aaron Holman of First Church of God in Thayer, Missouri, is starting a new workout regimen for both his body and his spirit. His workout routine involves lifting a barbell off the ground to the level of the hips, or “deadlifting,” 300 pounds in the gym located in the carport next to his home. In between sets of lifting, he exercises his mind and spirit by memorizing passages of the Bible. Four weeks ago, Pastor Holman finished memorizing Ephesians. Currently, he is midway through the book of Philippians. Continue reading

Pastor Josh Chaffin has made it clear that he wants to do whatever he can to spread the good news that Jesus is the subject and is still in the business of changing lives. This Creston Community Church pastor rejoices to report evidence for such a claim among the Church of God congregation he serves in the small town of Creston, Ohio. As it turns out, some of the most recent evidence of God’s hand at work at Creston surfaced when Pastor Josh began preaching a series based on the book by Jim Lyon, Jesus B. Certainly the book itself has no intrinsic power. But the biblically based concepts illustrated through the pages of this Church of God Convention 2015 freebie were tools in the hands of the Lord to touch a handful of lives—even as the series opened on April 10. Compelled to follow Jesus’ example in baptism, three believers were baptized two weeks later. But the story behind the story reveals again how God often works in mysterious ways. Continue reading

By Carl Stagner

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…” (Matthew 28:19 NIV). Often used to rally believers to evangelize, the Great Commission isn’t just about evangelism. Pastor Greg Sempsrott doesn’t want anyone to miss the second part of the Great Commission—the “teaching them to obey everything” part. That’s discipleship, and Pastor Greg is committed to making First Church of God in Vero Beach, Florida, a church of disciples making disciples. A figure most churches would love to call their own, First Church in Vero Beach is praising God for 50 percent small-group participation. Now they’re shooting for 60 percent, leaving many curious about their strategy. Continue reading
