Children of Promise and the Role of Women

Romina Portillo and Marlene Viray

By Kirk Bookout

Children of Promise was founded with a heartfelt desire to help children among the poor of the world by meeting immediate needs, and by making a long-term impact. In doing this, other positive things have happened, and continue to happen, in powerful ways. One way we see this is in the role of women in many countries we serve. This is often reflected in societies that have not traditionally offered opportunities for women. Continue reading

Every child is a treasure in God’s sight. Of this assertion, there is no discrepancy in the Church of God. As Jesus welcomed the children into his presence, congregations and individuals offer open arms to children all over the world, most of the time without even crossing an ocean. Through the child sponsorship ministry of the Church of God, individual and congregational reach is extended to parts of the world where hope for a brighter future is often only a dream. In this twenty-fifth year of ministry for Children of Promise, there is one Jewel that glistens especially bright, shining the light of Christ in church, community, and government. She’s living proof that dreams do come true. Continue reading

South Korean Chooses Generosity Over Knee Surgery

By Carl Stagner

If you’ve ever stood in need of knee surgery, you know the kind of pain she was in. She’d saved approximately $17,000 (US) and used it all. Every last penny. Today she’s still in tremendous pain, but not because the surgery was unsuccessful or because she’s on a long road to recovery. She decided to forego the operation, but not because it was too risky or because she got cold feet. Instead of using the money for herself, she was impressed by the Spirit to give it all away. Bokja Lee chose to support a building project in the Philippines over paying for knee surgery, and she puts up with the constant reminder every day. This is the story of her radical generosity. We cherish the stories of God’s grace and power at work among his people. They have become a part of who we are. We’re eternally grateful to God for preserving his Word through the ages, often in spite of opposition. We’re thankful for our church historians and writers who have told and retold the stories of our pioneer pastors and missionaries in the Church of God. From the biblical narrative, to our earliest days as a movement, to the kingdom activity of our local churches and missionaries today, such stories inspire us, remind us of God’s faithfulness, and bind us together. This year the gripping account of a World War II-ravaged Filipino pastor has come to light. It’s a story which few have heard, but no doubt one for the history books. Continue reading

UPDATE: Philippines Typhoon Disaster Relief

Residents of flooded farming villages in the Philippines were trapped on their rooftops on Monday, and animals floated down fast-rising rivers, as a result of the devastation caused by Typhoon Lando (international name: Koppu).

Head-level floods had also forced people to evacuate from their homes and put up tents along the roads to serve as temporary shelters because there were no designated evacuation centers. The churches which supposedly serve as the evacuation centers, for our members and beneficiaries of the program, were also submerged to neck-high floodwaters. One day following the typhoon, Rev. Eduardo Viray, the national leader of the Church of God in the Philippines, together with the staff of Grace Family Helper Project, visited the areas and witnessed the churches and houses in Calaba and San Antonio still in knee-high flood waters. “The waters arrived suddenly. We did not expect it at all,” the pastor in those areas said. Continue reading

Typhoon Koppu Lashes the Philippines

DisasterReliefLogo

Typhoon Koppu (Lando) made landfall in the Philippines over the weekend, slowly crossing the main island of Luzon, dumping as much as three feet of rain on some portions of the island. Now a tropical storm, the system is still affecting the northern portion of the island, where rain continues to fall. The rain has already triggered massive flooding and mudslides in localities across the island. As of Tuesday morning, more than 65,000 people have been displaced by the storm. Continue reading

Philippines Pastor On Kingdom Front Lines

When darkness meets light, it can’t help but flee. When spiritual kingdoms collide, the power of God is unleashed. At the leading edge of the kingdom of God in the Philippines, Pastor Edwin Ofalla is witnessing firsthand this clash between good and evil. In spite of the challenges, the fruit of Edwin’s labor is evident in some pretty spectacular miracles, including divine healing, the casting out of evil spirits, and a growing church. Through his ministry, disease has met the Deliverer, witchcraft has come face-to-face with the One who conquered the grave, and lost souls have been introduced to Jesus Christ. In a report submitted to leaders in the Asia-Pacific region, Eduardo Viray, national leader of the Church of God in the Philippines, offered a glimpse into the spiritual victories God has brought about through Edwin Ofalla: Continue reading

Eddie Viray, the national leader of the Church of God in the Philippines, recently updated Church of God Ministries on the devastation that Typhoon Haiyan left in its wake. Considered to be one of the worst storms to ever wreak havoc on the planet, Haiyan has only compounded problems caused by typhoons and an earthquake earlier this year. Cleanup is now underway, but nearly a million residents are displaced and in desperate need of clean water, food, and shelter. Continue reading
