Churches Bless Schools, Families as Fall Semester Dawns

Back-to-school haircut at Bedford First Church of God.

Teachers making final preparations for their classes, students dreading the end of summer, parents adjusting to new routines, and school buses on the streets again (drivers, be careful!)—it can only mean one thing: it’s that time of year again! School is back in session or will begin again soon across much of the country, signaling a community-wide shift from one season to the next. Sometimes that shift can be anything but smooth for families, just as it can be for teachers, administrators, and staff. We celebrate the Church of God congregations across the country that recognize the need and do what they can to meet the need. School supply drives, special prayer gatherings, and “back-to-school bashes” are just a few of the ways numerous congregations are coming alongside schools and families as the fall semester dawns. Arizona Pastors Invite You to the Sunny Southwest

Sunset over the brand-new Mountain Park building.

By Carl Stagner

Yuma, Arizona, is the sunniest city in the United States. Ninety percent of the time, residents bask in sunshine, while even a couple hours to the northeast, the Phoenix area still sees an annual average of 85-percent sunshine. While no meteorologist or travel agency can guarantee beautiful weather, the odds are good that conditions will be pretty incredible for the kickoff Regional Convention of the Church of God in Phoenix, Arizona, April 17–18. I should know; I grew up just northwest of downtown. Continue reading

Freeway Forces AZ Church Relocation, Opens Doors of Opportunity

Carrying the cross from the old property to the new.

Looming highway construction, a church situated in its projected path, and a ticking countdown to a deadline. A greater, divine plan might be hard to imagine. But such a plan had been in the works for years, and when the time finally came, Mountain Park Community Church of God in Phoenix, Arizona, knew they had quite a task on their hands. The church was built back in 1997 and, even at that time, the church was informed that plans to build a freeway through the area were being discussed, but that no action would be taken for years. It did take many years but, in 2015, everything had been decided. ADOT, the Arizona Department of Transportation, confirmed the $1.9-billion project to build a twenty-two-mile extension of Loop 202 from Interstate 10 through the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix, including the property on which the church was currently located. Mountain Park Community Church was given a two-year deadline to find land, design, and build a new church building. Continue reading

Arizona Church Reaches Out through Christ-Centered Yoga

By Emily Ploetz

“Peace be with you.” Peace may be a little word, but there is no word more freeing. Every morning, we burden ourselves with the weight of the world like the mythical Atlas. We would look for peace in the chaos of a busy life if we only had the time. Yet some of the most peaceful moments in life are when we are still—resting in the knowledge that the Lord is God. Mountain Park Community Church in Phoenix, Arizona, has created a time and space for a unique ministry that combines worship with a relaxing and renewing exercise: Christ-centered yoga. Continue reading
