Steadfast Stateside: A Sister’s Perspective on Missions

Editor’s note—Sometimes the story that doesn’t get told is the one about family and friends who are left behind when missionaries leave for the field. Honoring the retirement of career missionaries Sherman and Kay Critser, Cheral Critser—Sherman’s sister—offers a tribute to the couple and, at the same time, a unique perspective on missionary service.

Kay Critser was pregnant with Ryan and went to the doctor to see if she was having twins (Kay was a twin and there are twins in our family). They called on the phone, asking me to come over. I was excited and asked if they were having twins. Sherman laughed and hung up on me! As I went down the hill from the dorm, I was thanking and praising God for the twins. I crossed the street and was at the light post on the corner of the college library. I heard a voice loud and clear, “They are not having twins.” I jumped, looked around and there was no one around. The voice told me God was sending Sherman and Kay to Africa. Continue reading

Excellence in Ecuador: Seminary Intensive Trains Growing Number of Leaders

We tried something different, and…it was a success! Each year, the Church of God seminary in Ecuador offers a week long intensive to help train leaders in the Ecuadorian church. This year, we expanded the reach of the seminary by offering more class options, moving to a more spacious location, and including more Ecuadorian leadership. Last year, we had a total of twenty-five participants, with one international student. This year, we had seventy-six participants, with several international students! Continue reading

Healings Wow Doctors, Reflect Florida Church’s Spiritual Health

One of the children’s workers at Village View Community Church in Summerfield, Florida, received the devastating news that a serious heart condition would require her to undergo heart valve replacement surgery. Her breathing was difficult, and her blood flow was inhibited. She was intubated and given six hours-worth of anesthesia. Before the doctor began to operate, he decided to check the condition of the heart valves one more time. What happened next stunned the medical community, but was in many ways a reflection of a healthy, missional church that covered the patient in prayer. Continue reading

Pennsylvania Church Celebrates Healing, Kingdom Partnership

God has been at work at University Park Church of God in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. As God has moved, he gave a theme for each of the last three years, but the special focus of each year has continued on into subsequent years. The theme for 2014 was “A Year of Healing.” God continues to perform wonderful healings of past hurts and division, as well as miraculous physical, emotional, and mental healings in the congregation and outside the congregation.
