From the Archives: Synonyms of the Spirit

By Milburn Miller

In John 14:16 of the Amplified New Testament are several synonyms that help us understand the nature and work of the Holy Spirit: “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener and Standby) and He may remain with you forever.”

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter. He can and will console in times of sorrow, distress, and failure. He brings a sense of peace in the midst of frustrating circumstances. What a comfort to know that the Holy Spirit dwells within us and is available for our every need! Continue reading

Dynamite Regional Convention Speaker Returns for Convention 2019

Harvey Carey’s communication style is bold and engaging.

By Carl Stagner

It has been said that Harvey Carey is a “fire-starter”—that he “sets people and churches ablaze.” Of course, spiritual fire and fervor is the kind of blaze Harvey Carey’s high-octane preaching is known for producing. Those who attended the Church of God Regional Convention last year in Columbus, Ohio, have firsthand experience, as do thousands of others who attended IYC in the early 2000s. Thankfully the rest of the Church of God have another opportunity to sit under the explosive Spirit-led preaching of urban pastor Harvey Carey: Convention 2019 and General Assembly. Continue reading

Fairfax First Day a Joyful Celebration of Life

Tuesday evening led by a team from Celebration Church at Columbia.

By Carl Stagner

Earlier this year, an addition to the Fairfax Community Church facility was completed. The new wing, solely devoted to youth and children’s ministry, nearly doubled the size of the building. Gathering for worship and teaching sessions inside the new addition on the first day of the Church of God Regional in Fairfax, Virginia, afforded convention-goers a unique opportunity. While the five electives held on Tuesday afternoon demonstrated a rich depth of ministry insight on the part of the stellar host church staff, activity throughout the day under the church’s new roof served as a constant reminder of the life-giving DNA of Fairfax Community Church. The ideal setting for the kickoff of the fourth 2018 Regional Convention set the stage very well for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit through an interactive dialogue with Ben Hardman and Ben Sternke, moments of worship led by praise teams from Fairfax and Celebration Church at Columbia (Maryland), and an especially potent message from the general director. From the Archives: Core Questions We Must Ask About Our Movement

Old_library_stock_FORWEB

“The Spirit and the Bride say ‘Come!’” The church of the living God has always had a life-changing message. Come to the Bread of Life! Come to the Living Water! Come to the Prince of Peace! Come and you will be satisfied, and sent to say, “Come” to others.

The church lives in a world of crisis and need as if it has a right to exist in, of, and for itself to support its own interests. Apart from the indwelling, cleansing, enabling breath of the living God, the church has no life. Continue reading

Sunday’s coming. That’s a great thing if you’re talking about the resurrection of Christ. It’s also good news to the believer who has survived a difficult week at work, and just needs an encouraging word from the pastor. But the pastor needs an encouraging word from time to time, too. For pastors, Sunday is always coming, and that can often be an exhausting realization. But every year at the beginning of May, pastors in the Church of God know they have a place to go. A place for fellowship with other pastors. A break from the pressures at home. An encouraging word tailored just for them. Pastors’ Fellowship refreshes hundreds of Church of God pastors and laypeople every year, and 2016 was no exception. Focused on the Holy Spirit’s role in the church, those who attended Pastors’ Fellowship 2016 not only heard the Holy Spirit preached, but also experienced a fresh anointing. Continue reading

Movements of the Holy Spirit

By Bill Barkman

We can only say we are a movement of the Holy Spirit if the Holy Spirit is moving through us. Chapters one and two of Acts reveal markers that are deeper and broader than the people, issues, and fears to which we react. As we read about the working of Jesus’ Holy Spirit in the early disciples, there is both a visible preparation for, as well as filling of, the Holy Spirit. The filling will always follow the heart’s preparation. Continue reading
