A Multicultural Colorado Church’s Bivocational Advantage

The congregation at their centennial in 2017.

By Carl Stagner

In August 2008, Bobby Washington returned as senior pastor to East Denver Church of God in Denver, Colorado, along with his wife Regina. In the mid-1990s, they’d given pastoral leadership to the youth ministry there, soon after graduating from Mid-America. It’s not been easy doing ministry in the heart of the city, but it’s been a tremendous blessing. It’s also not been easy being bivocational, but they’ve found the payoff to be both eternally rewarding and incredibly practical. Meanwhile, the church continues to reach across the cultural spectrum, with flexibility otherwise unavailable if Pastor Bobby had insisted on a full-time position. Continue reading

The vision and mission of the Church of God is on the move! Excitement is spreading for what God is doing among us. One recent example takes us to Denver, Colorado, where a church plant has just joined the Church of God in Colorado. After forming a new partnership with the Church of God Colorado Conference, and after months of hard work and years of planning, Cross Culture Church just celebrated its official launch. A crowd of 376 gathered to celebrate the launch, five people were saved, and one followed Jesus’ example in baptism. Continue reading

While many Denver [Colorado] inner city churches are closing their doors and turning into residential lofts, Sloan’s Lake Community Church is more alive than ever. Maybe it’s because this Denver church hasn’t forgotten about what is important to God, feeding and clothing the homeless in our society. Many churches are also moving from the city and relocating in the suburbs, but several years ago they made the decision to stay in the city and grow where they were originally planted. Little did they know, but that decision would evolve into a significant ministry to the poor, broken and disenfranchised people of northwest Denver.

By Carl Stagner

Final preparations are being made for the 48th International Youth Convention of the Church of God, which returns to the Mile-High City next week. Following on the heels of the refreshing North American Convention, IYC2012 is designed for life change. Every time IYC convenes, students, youth leaders, volunteers, and even convention center staff and vendors experience some kind of life change. Students receive Christ, rededicate their lives to the Lord, receive calls to ministry, find freedom from sin, and grow in their faith. The energy and enthusiasm of the students and leaders before, during, and after this one-of-a-kind event is nothing short of contagious. Continue reading
