Convention 2019 Worship Leader Becoming Familiar Face, Voice

Josh Edington leading worship at CHOG Convention 2015.

By Carl Stagner

Some may not recognize his name, but most are beginning to recognize the face, the voice, the talent, and the heart of Josh Edington. On staff at Crossings Community Church for the past ten years, the pastor of contemporary worship arts for the largest Church of God congregation in North America has begun to build a reputation outside those walls. Beginning in 2015, at the second Church of God Convention outside Anderson, Indiana, Josh first strapped on his guitar and lifted his voice heavenward on behalf of the Movement. Then, when the traveling Regional Convention made a stop in Oklahoma City this year, Josh was there. CHOG Convention 2019 and General Assembly won’t be held in Oklahoma City, but Orlando, Florida, instead. Still, Josh will be there! Yet, as familiar as his excellence in worship leadership is becoming in the Church of God, many still may not know the young man behind the guitar. Continue reading

Phoenix, Oklahoma City Regional Conventions Commission All

Friendships, both old and new, are a Regional Convention highlight.

By Carl Stagner

Two of the five Church of God Regional Conventions 2018 are now history, but their impact is still being felt from Alaska to Alabama. Some may have flown to Arizona to escape winter’s clutch on spring, but they stayed to drink from an oasis in the desert. Others may have descended upon Oklahoma City for the fine barbecue, but they stayed because their cravings were satisfied in the life-giving teaching and fellowship. Still others attended, many as first-time guests of a Church of God convention, because this year’s variety of regional locations afforded them accessibility. Challenged to reclaim what hell has stolen, but inspired to fully embrace the Life, attendees of the first two Regional Conventions ultimately climbed in cars or boarded airplanes to return home, ready and resourced to change the world in Jesus’ name. The Truth that Both Hurts and Sets Free: OKC Regional Recap, Day 2

Jeff Whye preaching the truth that sets free.

By Carl Stagner

It wasn’t so much the wind sweepin’ through the plain, but there was quite a bit of rain at Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Nevertheless, the dreary skies seemed to have little or no impact on the mood of those gathered for Day 2 of the Regional Convention of the Church of God; after all, God was busy raining down blessing after blessing throughout the day. From a riveting message by host pastor Marty Grubbs, to an evening graced with the amazing voices of Sandi Patty and Don Peslis, the closing day of #LifeOKC was anything but dreary. During the day and after the closing service, convention-goers absorbed as much as they possibly could from every hard-hitting sermon, uplifting worship song, meeting, seminar, reception, and divinely orchestrated encounter. As a result, the portion of the Church of God that chose to make the second of five Regional Conventions this year their event-of-choice went away with tablets full of notes and quotes, hearts full of awe and wonder, and stomachs full of great Oklahoma City barbecue. Coming Home, Sending Out: OKC Regional Reflections, Day 1

Commissioning prayer for Sarah Hunnicutt.

By Carl Stagner

Bob Brooke, pastor of visitation at Shartel Church of God in Oklahoma City, perhaps put it best: “[Yesterday was the] beginning of two glorious days at Crossings Community Church for the Regional Convention of the Church of God.” A review of Tuesday at the second 2018 Regional Convention reveals a day marked by inhaling and exhaling life—of coming home and sending out. It was a reunion of a portion of the Church of God family, but it was also a rally to mobilize believers for ministry and mission. Considering the moments of inspirational worship led by Josh Edington and the Crossings worship band, the soul-nourishing seminar with Ben Hardman, and the beautiful commissioning of a new missionary for Global Strategy—only a part of the blessings that define the opening day of #LifeOKC—it’s no wonder one would label such an experience glorious. Crossings Community Welcomes Movement Back for 2018 Regional

The Chapel at Crossings ready to receive Convention guests!

By Carl Stagner

The first Church of God Regional Convention of 2018 has come and gone, but the impact is still being felt by those who descended upon the desert Southwest last week. For several days, social media was abuzz with pictures and posts from the event, giving people across the country a glimpse of what these events have to offer. Beginning Tuesday, April 24, for much of the Church of God, especially those in the central region of the country, the “Receive, Hear, Embrace Life” experience will come into full view. A tremendous lineup of speakers and worship leaders are slated to inspire, challenge, and equip pastors and laypeople to reclaim what hell has stolen in their cities and towns. Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City is perfectly suited to open their doors, once again, for another life-giving gathering of the Church of God. Continue reading

What Satan Meant for Evil, God Meant for Good in Sanford, Florida

By Carl Stagner

“The first couple of years, we were just trying to survive.” In June 1998, Keith Wilkins accepted the call to pastor the Church of God congregation in Sanford, Florida. The situation was not good. Legal challenges, insurmountable debt, and a small group of people isn’t exactly the description of an opportunity pastoral candidates would get excited about. Well-meaning individuals advised against it, not out of ill intent, but simply trying to be realistic. Bankruptcy and closure made the most sense at the time. But the God we serve loves to defy that which makes sense to us, particularly when he receives the glory. Approaching two decades and countless miracles later, Pastor Keith is glad he chose to stay. Church of God Convention 2015: Bold, Inspirational, Unforgettable

By Carl Stagner

The charge has been given. A line has been drawn in the sand. We’ve accepted the challenge. Church of God Convention 2015 galvanized the Church of God to boldly reclaim in Jesus’ name that which hell has stolen. Where the bond of perfectness is broken by the evil of racism, we’ve resolved to be agents of reconciliation. Where the enemy has hijacked tradition for his crafty schemes, we’ve determined to honor our heritage while following the leading of the Holy Spirit. Where selfish ambition and lukewarmness have subtly crept into our local churches, we’ve pledged to renew our humble fervor. Where hell has sieged the sacred, we’ve committed to reclamation for heaven’s sake. Continue reading

Timothy J. Clarke is no stranger to the Church of God. For thirty-three years he has served as senior pastor of First Church of God in Columbus, Ohio. We’ve come to know him as one who consistently preaches the gospel with boldness and a dynamic style all his own. Countless camp meetings, conventions, conferences, and revivals have been blessed tremendously by his warm spirit and candor, mixed with just the right amount of humor. The Church of God Convention in Anderson has provided a platform for his deeply resonant delivery of the gospel, including a memorable message preached at the Global Gathering in 2013. We’re pleased to announce that one of our own—Timothy J. Clarke—will speak at the Monday evening kickoff worship session—also featuring worship led by Christian recording artists Selah. Movement-wide Prayer for CHOG Convention Begins This Week

Littleprayer2009_FORWEB

By Carl Stagner

For more than a century, Church of God people have gathered together on an annual basis to worship, connect with one another, and seek the Lord to propel the movement forward. Last year Church of God Convention and General Assembly participation showed significant signs of revitalization. Attendance numbers were up, geographic representation peaked, and representation of the total Church of God population in North America dramatically increased. Renewed hope for the present and future of God’s church was also evident among the gathered saints. This wave of momentum did not happen by accident, however. Prayer was vital to the Holy Spirit making last year’s event so pivotal in the movement’s history. CHOG Convention 2015 will be no different. The role of prayer will be paramount. So we’ve developed a free downloadable prayer guide to help you and your church undergird the before, the during, and the after of CHOG Convention 2015: Be Bold. Reclaim. Continue reading
