From the Archives: Why I Choose to Be a Pastor

As of March, I have completed forty years as a minister of the Church of God, all of which has been spent in the pastoral ministry. Why would a person choose to be a pastor? Why do I still want to continue in this field? To explain why, I first need to say that I did not choose the ministry; God chose me. Of this I am very sure. I was called to be a minister while still in high school. During some of the difficult times in the work of God through the years, that calling has kept me at the task. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Eph 2:10 KJV). How much this means to every believer of the Lord Jesus—to fully realize that this comes personal to each of us. We are his workmanship. Through an active, humble, childlike life, the world beholds in each of us the workmanship of the Almighty God. Both my wife and I are “PKs” (pastor’s kids), and we have spent a lifetime living the highs and lows of life in ministry. This is no small reason why we love to encourage pastors and the ministries they serve. Church of God Agencies Unite to Pray for Pastors

Every senior pastor and his or her staff. Each one. Covered in prayer over the thirty-one days that make up October. During Pastor Appreciation Month 2013, Church of God Ministries joined forces with Christian Women Connection, Children of Promise, Warner Press, and Silent Blessings to specifically pray for the pastors of all 2,100-plus Church of God congregations in the United States and Canada.
