“Church in the Palms” is spelled out in large letters on the side of the building at 3812 Jog Road in Greenacres, Florida. This does not mean the congregation that goes by the name feels any sense of ownership of the place. For them, the property is God’s to accomplish what he wants done on it. Is it really any wonder then that the ministry hub houses a variety of nonprofits, including ten other churches with worship services taking place in English, Spanish, and Creole? In the past few years alone, Pastor Shawn Allen has led the church to embrace a strategic vision that would inspire as many Christians as possible in Palm Beach County to see God’s vision, connect with God’s people, and join God’s mission. The radical, yet conceptually simple approach to what the pastor calls “missional unity” is already bearing tremendous fruit in and for the community. Continue reading

Looming highway construction, a church situated in its projected path, and a ticking countdown to a deadline. A greater, divine plan might be hard to imagine. But such a plan had been in the works for years, and when the time finally came, Mountain Park Community Church of God in Phoenix, Arizona, knew they had quite a task on their hands. ADOT, the Arizona Department of Transportation, confirmed the $1.9-billion project to build a twenty-two-mile extension of Loop 202 from Interstate 10 through the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix, including the property on which the church was currently located. Mountain Park Community Church was given a two-year deadline to find land, design, and build a new church building. Continue reading

If you’ve ever stood in need of knee surgery, you know the kind of pain she was in. She’d saved approximately $17,000 (US) and used it all. Every last penny. Today she’s still in tremendous pain, but not because the surgery was unsuccessful or because she’s on a long road to recovery. She decided to forego the operation, but not because it was too risky or because she got cold feet. Instead of using the money for herself, she was impressed by the Spirit to give it all away. Bokja Lee chose to support a building project in the Philippines over paying for knee surgery, and she puts up with the constant reminder every day. This is the story of her radical generosity.
