Pakistan: Educators Celebrate Pastors, Invest in Leadership Development

Dr. MaryAnn Hawkins teaches in Pakistan.

By Carl Stagner

Earlier this year, we brought you the story of “Facebook Seminary”—an innovative, online approach to providing quality education to pastors-in-training in Pakistan. Every Saturday evening during their semester, they gather around a screen to learn under the teaching of Anderson University adjunct professor, Dr. Sarah Blake LaRose. The George Theological College in Karachi, Pakistan, originally hoped that a theological professor from the United States could actually come and teach for at least a year, but the costs were prohibitive. Thus, the Facebook idea was born. Sarah has now taught the Pakistani students for three semesters using the free video option of Facebook Messenger. Continue reading

Regional Day 2: Church of God Unleashed for ‘Greater Works’

Don Wilson challenged and inspired on Wednesday night.

By Carl Stagner

Daring to do something about racial reconciliation, champion those far from God, challenge the status quo, or lift up Jesus over all other subjects, the Church of God was inspired Wednesday to reclaim what hell has stolen. It didn’t matter that the sermons stung a bit; truth can hurt, and we needed to hear the truth. It didn’t matter that a Church of God Ministries employee missed the first session of the morning; he encountered a homeless man, was compelled to pray with him, and took the time to purchase the T-shirts he was in need of. It didn’t matter that students from the school across the street from the convention host church hung out on church property, inside and out, after the dismissal bell rang; those students need Christ, and they’ve learned they’re more than welcome at Mountain Park Church—even when a convention is taking place. Restored: Getting Back to Who You Were Meant to Be,” by Marty Grubbs, is already receiving widespread interest and acclaim. So, what does it really mean to be restored? Continue reading

General Assembly Makes Historic Convention Decision

By Carl Stagner

For more than a century, the Church of God has convened almost every summer for worship, preaching, fellowship, and the General Assembly. In a historic vote, this year’s General Assembly decided overwhelmingly to make a change to the frequency of the Church of God Convention. Signaling a new day for the Church of God, the resolution paves the way for maximum General Assembly and convention accessibility and engagement. Continue reading

Church of God Convention 2015: Bold, Inspirational, Unforgettable

By Carl Stagner

The charge has been given. A line has been drawn in the sand. We’ve accepted the challenge. Church of God Convention 2015 galvanized the Church of God to boldly reclaim in Jesus’ name that which hell has stolen. Where the bond of perfectness is broken by the evil of racism, we’ve resolved to be agents of reconciliation. Where the enemy has hijacked tradition for his crafty schemes, we’ve determined to honor our heritage while following the leading of the Holy Spirit. Where selfish ambition and lukewarmness have subtly crept into our local churches, we’ve pledged to renew our humble fervor. Where hell has sieged the sacred, we’ve committed to reclamation for heaven’s sake. Continue reading

Church of God Response to SCOTUS Same-Sex Marriage Ruling Forthcoming

Church of God ministers and laypeople from across the country and around the world are easing down from the life-transforming, mountain-top experience divinely granted to us at Church of God Convention 2015. Please pray for safe travel, as many are still in the air or on the road—including Church of God Ministries staff. Traveling back from the convention, we’ve not only returned to our families and friends, but this year we’ve also returned home to breaking news from the Supreme Court of the United States. Convention Wednesday: Storming the Gates of Hell, Bold Reclamation

By Carl Stagner

A boy delivered from the chains of captivity. An inner-city strip club purchased by a church and transformed into a community center. Barriers broken in secular Europe, making way for a new leadership development initiative. Women who’ve discovered the God-given, therapeutic qualities of horses—and the generous giving of people like you to make it possible. A stone rolled away from a tomb, ushering in the chance for all of our hearts to sing, “I’ve just seen Jesus and I’ll never be the same again!” And finally, God’s anointed, positioned in the world for such a time as this, to bring healing, to bring laughter, to bring necessary challenge. This is the witness of the Church of God, brought to fruition at different points over the past two thousand-plus years, but brought once again to our attention on Wednesday at Church of God Convention 2015. Transformational Tuesday at CHOG Convention 2015

By Carl Stagner

Thunder echoed long and loud at Church of God Convention 2015 on Tuesday evening. But it was a sunny day, and Oklahoma City’s professional basketball team did not pay a visit. But the Holy Spirit was present, moved in a mighty way, and prompted two thousand believers to their feet with hands clapping in voices raised. On Tuesday, Shane & Shane got the saints joyfully praising the Lord in both rousing and contemplative worship, as did the Crossings Venue Band. The General Assembly held its opening 2015 session, while several get-togethers and conferences offered mealtime opportunities that fed more than just the body. At worship services spread across the day, Gillian Grannum, Steve Southards, and Sheila Walsh each brought their own distinctive and soul-stirring styles to the stage. Hands were laid upon missionaries as brothers and sisters in Christ prayed and commissioned new opportunities to spread the gospel. Monday’s momentum never let up. Continue reading

Join the Conversation at CHOG Convention 2015!

By Carl Stagner

We get it, pastors. The proliferation of social media and mobile devices has made it difficult to tell if your phone-wielding parishioners are on YouTube or You Version. Surely most of them are paying attention to your sermon and following along on their paperless version of the Bible! Church of God Convention 2015 is your opportunity to trade places and perspectives with the person-in-the-pew. All pastors need regular opportunities to soak in the scriptures as taught by others. So bring your dog-eared classic or your Bible app—but don’t limit yourself to Bible Gateway or Bible.is. Join the conversation on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram using the official convention hashtag—#BeBold2015. Continue reading

CHOG Convention 2015: Timothy Clarke Announced

Photo: Timothy Clarke

By Carl Stagner

Timothy J. Clarke is no stranger to the Church of God. For thirty-three years he has served as senior pastor of First Church of God in Columbus, Ohio. We’ve come to know him as one who consistently preaches the gospel with boldness and a dynamic style all his own. Countless camp meetings, conventions, conferences, and revivals have been blessed tremendously by his warm spirit and candor, mixed with just the right amount of humor. The Church of God Convention in Anderson has provided a platform for his deeply resonant delivery of the gospel, including a memorable message preached at the Global Gathering in 2013. We’re pleased to announce that one of our own—Timothy J. Clarke—will speak at the Monday evening kickoff worship session—also featuring worship led by Christian recording artists Selah. Church of God Convention 2015: Celebrating CHOG TraffickLight

TraffickLight_banner_ BW_FORWEB

By Carl Stagner

It’s been nearly a year since the Church of God took a stand against human trafficking and for the cause of freedom. CHOG TraffickLight mobilized the movement in a way that many have observed as unprecedented. Since Church of God Convention 2014, congregations have collectively raised the banner of Jesus Christ and worked together as his hands and feet. The Church of God continues in the footsteps of Christ as his kingdom advances, reclaiming in Jesus’ name that which hell has stolen. At this year’s Church of God Convention, we’ll come together to celebrate what the Lord has accomplished through us. Continue reading

By Carl Stagner

Church of God Convention 2015—Royals, Knights, Evangels, and Ravens welcome! Of course, all others are welcome, too! We simply want alumni of Warner University, Warner Pacific College, Mid-America Christian University, and Anderson University to be aware of the celebrations, receptions, and other opportunities your alma mater is bringing to this year’s convention. Even if you didn’t attend one of these Church of God schools, some of these events still apply to you! But most of these events also require RSVP by Monday, June 1. Continue reading
