Arise! CWC Announces Ministry to Empower, Equip Women in Ministry

By Carl Stagner

The Church of God has a long, rich history of affirming women in ministry. While the movement hasn’t been flawless in it support for women clergy, great strides have been made in recent years to return to our roots. After all, we stand upon a foundation today laid long ago by early women leaders in the Church of God movement, not to mention the women leaders recorded in Scripture. A new season of support for women in ministry has begun as Christian Women Connection announced Arise at Convention 2019 and General Assembly in Orlando, Florida. Formerly Qara, the new ministry branch of CWC stretches beyond its own history of rallying all women of the Church of God to a specific area of need—coming alongside and resourcing women in ministry. Women-in-Ministry Support Expands as CWC Assumes Leadership of Qara

By Jim Lyon

From its inception, the Church of God movement has been an advocate for gender equity, seating and celebrating both women and men in all chairs of ministry and church leadership. This theology and practice are grounded in a deep vein of Scripture which elevates both men and women as the imago dei. At the dawn of the New Testament church, the apostle Peter quotes the prophet Joel, saying, “In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they will prophesy” (Acts 2:18 NLT). If there’s one thing we know as Christians, it’s that God works in mysterious ways, often keeping the road ahead of us hidden from our sight. He often calls us to step out in faith, not knowing where that call will lead.

A little more than fifty-four years ago, Jim and Mary Nipp set sail from New York Harbor with a one-way ticket on a freighter ship bound for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. A year later, God led them to Maun, Botswana, where they began a ministry as independent Church of God missionaries that has blossomed into a healthy, vibrant church, with five congregations across the country. In 2012, Jim wrote: “Our first service was under a tree in Maun. We cut logs for pews. A broken truck spring and a tire lever made a perfect bell. Twenty-one people attended that service.” Over the years, the Nipps have walked in fellowship with these congregations, nurturing them to spiritual maturity. Continue reading
