Mountain-top Experience Affords Tremendous ViewPoint

The Cove on a clear, moon-lit evening.

By Carl Stagner

At 3,885 feet above the cares of the world, Cedar Cliff Overlook, just minutes from the Billy Graham Training Center, reminds guests that the Artist who painted such breathtaking scenery is the same God who wants to give us a chance to catch our breath. Even in ministry—or especially in ministry—moments of rest and renewal are a must! When the vantage point of a pastor or layperson constantly focuses the eyes on the next task, it’s time to retreat. The CBH Retreat to the Cove has long served as a prescription for long seasons of work, ministry, and hurry. This October 15–18, join Jim Lyon, Larnelle Harris, Joe and Merry Cookston, Melissa Pratt, Wesley Duff, and Rob Kespelher for a mountain-top experience unlike any other. And, as you pull away from the crowd, you’ll find yourself in good company with Jesus (Mark 6:31). Continue reading

Behind the Microphone: An Inside Look at CBH ViewPoint

By Mykaela Alvey

Over the course of several decades, Jim Lyon has become more and more familiar to the Church of God. Though he started a career in politics, Jim felt and accepted called to serve in ministry, one which he has been fulfilling in various ways since. For more than twenty years he served as senior pastor for Madison Park Church of God, located in Anderson, Indiana. After a few years, he took on the role of speaker/host for the CBH English broadcast, ViewPoint. In 2013, he stepped up to fulfil the role of general director for Church of God Ministries. When asked how he fulfilled this role, what it’s like behind the scenes of making this broadcast, and how he is reaching people across the world, Jim gave insightful and wise answers, answers that reflected the calling he has been fulfilling for the majority of his life. Radio Ministry Celebrates 70 Years of Broadcasting Hope

By Mykaela Alvey

In 1947, an Anderson College student named Richard Lee Meischke, who had an interest in radio, conceived the idea of a nationally distributed radio broadcast about the Church of God. This idea, followed up by conversations with a talented preacher at Anderson’s Park Place Church of God, Dr. Dale Oldham, and the Board of Church Extension and Home Missions, led to the launch what would be known as Christian Brotherhood Hour in January of 1947. Using the sanctuary of Park Place Church, they began producing programs, with Dr. Oldham acting as host and speaker. Their slogan would be, “A united Church for a divided world.” Continue reading

The Generational Impact of Church of God Radio on Cuba

CubaMap_PeterHermesFurian_canstockphoto_FORWEB

By Carl Stagner

In March 2016, President Obama paid a historic visit to Cuba. For the first time in nearly ninety years, a sitting U.S. president visited the island nation, following a lift on the ban of commercial flights into Cuba. While the latest development in an attempt at diplomatic relations may have been breaking news in political circles, the Church of God reach into Cuba is nothing new. Since the first visit to Cuba by a Church of God evangelist in 1901, the impact of the Church of God on individuals and congregations there has continued. Not only have missionaries poured their lives into Cuba, but published material like La Trompeta has proven highly influential. Yet another constant source of the Good News since at least the 1970s has been Church of God radio. Continue reading

Christmas_CBH_2015_FORWEB

Frankenmuth, Michigan, might sound more like a Halloween town than the home of the largest Christmas store in the world. But at Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the most wonderful time of the year is, in fact, when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Bronner’s is also the location at which five broadcasts of CBH ViewPoint were recorded, just in time for the season! Perhaps you’ve never tuned in to ViewPoint before, or maybe it’s been awhile. Be sure to tune in to this special, don’t-miss Christmas series, which will bring peace to your soul and, at times, tears of joy to your eyes. In each broadcast you’ll discover the deeper meanings behind the majesty of the manger. Continue reading

By Carl Stagner

How many hats does your pastor wear? Maybe you are that pastor, and you know all too well that we’re not talking about fashion. From preacher to teacher, from administrator to janitor, today’s pastor continually juggles responsibilities at the church, the hospital, the nursing home, the second job, and more—not to mention his or her own household. It’s time to relax, take a deep breath, and make plans to get away for just a few days in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. The annual CBH Retreat to the Cove could be just the break you need. Pastors will be intrigued this year by the first-ever Pastor Track added to the schedule. So, churches, would you consider making it possible for your pastor to “retreat to The Cove” this year? After all, the October 18–21 event takes place smack dab in the middle of Pastor Appreciation Month. Continue reading

God’s Perfect Timing: Honoring the Life of Daniel N’Goran

By Kerry Robinson

God’s timing is always perfect. Even when we do not understand it at the time, it is always perfect. Even halfway around the world (as I am as I write this in Côte d’Ivoire), it is always perfect.

Over a year ago, our missionaries Larry and LeAnn Sellers invited me to return to Côte d’Ivoire to teach another group of Ivorian Pastors at the West Africa Bible Institute. Our partnership with the Ivorian church has grown extensively over the last eighteen years. People and pastors from East Side Church of God have provided work camps, funding, and teaching. Pastors from Côte d’Ivoire have visited East Side on three occasions over the last decade. My returning to teach a class this September was simply another link in the chain that connects our congregation to the congregations of this West African nation. But God had other plans, perfect plans with incredible timing. Continue reading

A Conversation with the Man Behind 70,000 Church Plants

1.2 billion people live in India. Among the vast range of needs in this massive country, there are very few that differ from other locations around the world. Yet the unique culture and diversity of language and landscape make India a truly one-of-a-kind place. There are sixteen major languages spoken by at least ten million people each. The predominant religion is Hinduism, but Islam’s influence is growing rapidly. Yet ringing through the noise of political and religious disunity, there is a gospel of hope and peace in Jesus Christ. Through the leadership of Samuel Stephens, God has planted some seventy thousand new churches—most in regions where the gospel had never been preached. In May 2014, this Indians leader paid a visit to the United States. While here, he spent some time with Jim Lyon and discussed life and ministry matters. Continue reading

CBH and the Global Gathering

CBH_GlobalGathering_Group_FORWEB

By Gilbert Davila

Standing together at the Global Gathering in Anderson, Indiana, with fellow CBH team members was a precious and valuable experience. We heard portions of each radio program and testimonies from the speakers about what it is like working in each culture. And sometimes it sounded very different, from Christians being persecuted all over the world to small miracles happening every day. God is at work, and that is evident. Continue reading
