Eddie Viray, the national leader of the Church of God in the Philippines, recently updated Church of God Ministries on the devastation that Typhoon Haiyan left in its wake. Considered to be one of the worst storms to ever wreak havoc on the planet, Haiyan has only compounded problems caused by typhoons and an earthquake earlier this year. Cleanup is now underway, but nearly a million residents are displaced and in desperate need of clean water, food, and shelter.
Aid has already been dispersed, but much more is needed. Church of God Ministries is asking congregations to consider a special Thanksgiving love offering this Sunday to provide much-needed relief to our brothers and sisters in the Philippines.
In a conversation with Viray via Skype, it became apparent that monetary donations are most helpful at this time. While food and building materials are needed, the transportation of these supplies is nearly impossible due to the collapsed infrastructure. Viray reports that semi-trucks are having extreme difficulty bringing in supplies, but that financial support actually frees the relief workers to expeditiously purchase items where they are needed most.
