Warner University President Greg Hall is pleased to announce that football is coming to Warner University. Athletic Director Kevin Jones made the official announcement on Tuesday afternoon alongside newly appointed head coach Jeff Schaum. Warner will begin season competition in the fall of 2013.

At the Tuesday press conference Jones announced the school’s decision to add Warner’s 18th athletic program at the approval of the Board of Trustees who met on May 4th. “Realizing the need for a Christian university football program in central Florida, Warner University has announced the launch of its football program set to begin competition in the fall of 2013,” Jones said. In a room full of faculty, administration and staff along with members of the local media the University’s plan was laid out by Jones and the school’s first-ever head football coach.

The program will be under the direction of Jeff Schaum who most recently worked as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Victory Christian Academy in Lakeland, Florida. His collegiate coaching career includes a graduate assistant position under legendary head coach Bobby Bowden at Florida State University as well as time at Head Coach of Cisco Junior College and Defensive Coordinator / Assistant Head Coach at McMurray University in Abilene, Texas.

After moving to Florida for family reasons years ago and transitioning into the world of high school football, Schaum said he kept his eyes open for the next collegiate opportunity: “I always wanted to get back into collegiate football but the right opportunity never arose.” During the press conference Coach Schaum outlined three specific criteria that Warner University football players must have: “They have to be good Christian men with a desire to fulfill their academic potential and compete athletically at a high level.”

Schaum also noted that Warner should be able to compete right away with the bevy of talent in the Sunshine State. “I’ve coached in both Texas and Florida…Texas has more numbers but Florida has better athletes,” Schaum said.

Student-Athletes who seek to play at the collegiate level and integrate their Christian faith with higher education can apply for admission at www.warner.edu. Although intercollegiate play is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2013, interested athletes can participate in the fall of 2012 as the program will begin conditioning and skill development as they build the program’s foundation.
